Love this video and can’t get it out of my head.
It’s an insanely accurate operations manual on how to build an extraordinary company culture.
If this was a university instructional video and taught as a class it would literally change the world.
It’s that good.
“Go to any team and say, “Who's the asshole?” They will all point to the same person.” - Simon Sinek
A decade ago, I'd probably have told you that culture was one of many important elements in any company's makeup along with vision, strategy, marketing and the like...
I came to see that culture isn't just one aspect of the game, it is the game.
Building company culture is not rocket science.
If you’re willing to fire competent jerks that make everyone else's life a living hell.
It’s remarkable what happens when you make that decision.
Firing is more important than hiring.
Hiring is guessing.
Firing is knowing.
It sets the tone.
The biggest mistake you can make is to tolerate competent jerks because they are difficult to replace.
By doing so, you're sending the message to the rest of the crew that they can get away with murder as long as leadership believe them to be indispensable.
Imagine what kind of culture this creates over time.
There are two questions you need to ask yourself every day.
What do you expect from your people?
What do you tolerate from them?
You can’t control how they act, but you can control what you accept from them.
If you want to make sure everyone in the workplace follows certain behaviors, an easy way to do that is by including it as a graded part of their performance evaluation.
You can directly let people know how they are or aren't meeting your expectations and values.
